Tommy Dowd (1891-1892)

While a center fielder for the Washington Senators, Tommy Dowd moonlighted in the off-season as a Georgetown law student and served as a player-coach for Georgetown football in the 1891 and 1892 seasons.

Dowd's career at Georgetown ended when he was traded in 1893 to the St. Louis Browns, where he served as manager for two seasons before completing his major league career with the Boston Red Sox in 1901.

Sent to the minors, Dowd played three seasons in Class B ball in the Northeast, coaching Williams College baseball in the spring and one season at Saint Louis University in football, both in 1905. He served as a player and/or manager for minor league teams in Burlington, Hartford, and New Bedford into his early forties, and appears to have returned to Williams at some point as a coach in the 1910's.

Having retired from sports, Tommy Dowd died by drowning in 1933 while swimming in the Connecticut River, near his home in Holyoke, MA.
