Maurice Dubofsky (1968-1969)

After the departure of Mike Agee as head coach, Georgetown turned back the clock and welcomed a familiar name from its college football heyday.

A self-described football fundamentalist, Dubofsky arrived at Georgetown in 1928, earning the nickname "Mush" for his play in the trenches. Dubofsky was a three year letterman and earned honorable mention All-America in 1931, anchoring a Georgetown defensive line that held opponents under nine points a game that season.

Dubofsky joined the New York Giants in 1932, but was called back to the Hilltop by a fellow Giants teammate, Jack Hagerty, who had been named head coach of the Hoyas midway through the season. Dubofsky served as the defensive coordinator for 14 seasons in what many consider the pinnacle of Georgetown football, as the Hoyas carried a 23 game unbeaten streak and a #10 rating through the tail end of the 1940 season, earning an Orange Bowl bid. Eighteen former players coached by Dubofsky would go one to NFL careers.

The announced deemphasis of football at Georgetown after the 1948 season cost Hagerty and his staff their jobs. Dubofsky quit in early 1949 after being reassigned to develop a lightweight (under 150 pound) team at Georgetown and then began a legal career. He soon returned to the gridiron, serving as head coach at St. John's (DC) High School for 13 seasons, with nine Catholic League championships in that tenure, He added later stops at DeMatha and the former South Hills HS in Pittsburgh. When he returned to Georgetown in 1968, the 58 year old Dubofsky was the oldest head coach in school history, but perhaps its most experienced.

Dubofsky's experience and stern approach won him the loyalty of his teams, which carried the Hoyas to back to back winning seasons in 1968 and 1969. The Hoyas enjoyed a strong 1969 season, going 5-2, but Dubofsky was sidelined in mid-October with a heart attack, leaving the remainder of the season to assistant coach Scott Glacken. While in recovery, Dubofsky suffered a fatal heart attack in early 1970.

Since 1976, the Maurice Dubofsky Memorial Award has been presented to the outstanding student-athlete on the Georgetown team.
