Jackie Maloney (1923)

One of Georgetown's most popular athletes of his day, Jackie Maloney's time as head football coach is, like the man himself, all but forgotten today.

A star athlete at Boston's Dorchester HS, Maloney followed his high school coach, John O'Reilly, to Washington in 1914. He starred for four seasons on the Georgetown football team as a quarterback and punter.

Though his did not complete his degree studies after military service for World War I, Maloney remained as an assistant football coach under Albert Exendine. Upon the departure of Exendine, Maloney was a popular choice to succeed him, having served as an interim basketball and baseball coach for an ailing John O'Reilly in the 1922-23 season.

Maloney was signed to a one year contract and led the 1923 football team to a disappointing 3-6 record, and the contract was not renewed. "It seems to be the opinion of Georgetown alumni and those closely connected with athletics at the college that Maloney did not do as well as he should have with the material he had at hand," wrote the Washington Post.

Despite his popularity, Maloney disappeared from the Georgetown consciousness. There is no reference to him in later issues of the HOYA or the alumni magazine--the 1957 alumni directory lists him as simply having "no address". Anecdotal evidence suggests Maloney relocated to Boston and raised a family there, as a John H. Maloney Jr. graduated from Boston College in 1950.

Per Social Security records, Jackie Maloney died in 1971 at the age of 74.
